Is It Cheaper To Grow Your Own Fruit And Vegetables?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

No is the honest answer to this question, unpalatable as it may be to some gardeners !
The sheer scale of supermarket 'purchase power' means that vegetables and fruit are actually very keenly priced.
If you are growing fruit and vegetables you have to think about not just the price of seeds, but all the feed or fertiliser that you may need to buy, as well as pots, grow bags, stakes, netting etc.  Time is also a consideration and all the plants need to be watered and protected from slugs and birds etc.
But, growing your own fruit and vegetables is rewarding and you know exactly what pesticides or insecticides were used (or not used) to help them grow.  You also know that no one was expolited in the whole process of growing the produce.  Moreover, they usually taste far superior to those found in the shops, even organic fruit and vegetables.  So ultimately it is worth growing your own, even if you don't save much money!
