This Question Is Answered:
I Have 14 Yr Old Shih Tzu With Bilateral Luxating Patella's That Is Having Trouble Going Potty. Also Gaining Wt., Is There Anything I Can Do To Help Her?
Sassy is 14 and is showing her age. Her vet had her on anti-inflammatory med and pain med that hasn't improved her mobility. Is there anything short of surgery (I feel she is too old) that I can do for her. I also don't want to malnourish her, is there a food I can feed, she eats moist food due to having teeth removed a while ago, her that will help with the weight. She weighs 11.2 lbs. Thanks to all who can help. Should I try another vet?

There are some things that are said to help prevent further degeneration.. But where she is, without surgery, trying to manage the pain and inflammation is pretty much all you're going to be able to do.

If the meds weren't working tell the vet you want to try something else, or a higher dosage... You can help her when she needs to relieve herself by slinging a thin towel under her belly so that you can give her stability and help support her weight.  As far as the food's concerned, I'm sure there must be diet canned food for dogs... Ask your vet, he probably sells it.

If you don't have confidence in your vet, or don't feel he's doing all he can to help relieve her pain and suffering, then by all means get a second opinion... But the options at this point are fairly limited.

.. As an after thought.. There are doggie carts for this sort of thing.. And I hear some dogs take quite well to them... Here's one link... But there's are many.

My dog has the same thing, but she is only 3, so we got her the surgery, and what our vet gave us was a sling that went around her tummy and we would hold onto it while she went potty, and you kind of hold them up off of their back legs so that they do not have to put any weight on it.

Well your dog is very old maybe you should think about putting her down or first get her looked at there are lots of things dogs can get good luck though.

P.s. You can tell if your dog is not feeling well if you lift its lip and its gums are grey
