Our Baby Hamsters Are Disappearing - What Is Happening???

On 9/15/07 we found 7 baby hamsters in the cage with our "male" hamsters. They were a surprise but we welcomed them. The mom has been a great mom. The babys were all there on Tuesday 10/2/07. On Wednesday we noticed one was missing and searched high and low with no luck. As of today 10/5/07 we only have three babies left. They are almost as big as the mom and I can't believe she would eat them at this late stage - is it possible??

The mother is either feeling threatened or there is something wrong with the babies that only she can tell. It is VERY important not to bother mother and babies for the first week to 10 days. Looking at them, handling the mom or the babies or changing the cage litter during that time can cause the mother anxiety and she will kill the babies.
