Are There Really Monkeys In Gibraltar?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

There are real live monkeys living in the small British colony of Gibraltar. The monkeys are actually Barbary apes, and they reside on the actual rock. There are fours packs of apes altogether, and they each have an area where they retreat to on the evenings. The monkeys are a big attraction; the taxi trips and cable cars take you to the top of the rock where the monkeys frolic. The taxi drivers will place food around and encourage the monkeys to car surf.

However, as funny as it may seem, it is actually an offence to feed the monkeys and is punishable by a fine. They have a specific diet but are becoming lazy and losing their ability to forage and becoming susceptible to disease such as obesity and diabetes. Unsuspecting visitors lose sunglasses and earrings on a regular basis; the monkeys are wild and will steal anything. It is advisable to not carry anything with you; including cameras.
