How Can I Help My Chihuahua Produce More Milk?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

How old are your pups? The produce colostrum initially which is how the pups get the bulk of their antibodies and the milk comes in 3 or 4 days after whelp. Making sure the pups nurse frequently enough helps with milk stimulation. You can also add a very small amount of puppy replacement formula in with her food. You need to be careful though as chihuahua's (any nursing female can suffer though) are very prone to milk fever (eclampsia) and you need to be sure you follow the advice of your veterinarian exactly. You don't want her to overproduce milk (can happen just from production) and then nearly die because of it either so you should check with your vet to be sure she is actually under producing before taking any steps to get her to produce more. Everything checked out well during the 24 hour post whelp exam and everything and there are no other concerns? Good luck.
