What Is The Best Portrait Lens For The Canon 20d?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Canon EOD 20D already comes with an 18 – 55 mm EF-S lens which itself has an excellent quality. You can also go for a 17 – 85 mm EF-S lens for a better quality output. It is advisable to stick to these lenses rather than going for something else. These lenses will give you the maximum quality and make your photos outstanding by giving them a better viewing experience. The camera itself boasts an excellent 8.2 megapixel camera which is the best. The camera along with the lens does not come cheap so you better be ready to spend a fortune on it.

The best buy for a Portrait lens for this camera is the Canon 50 mm F 1.8 II lens.  They cost about 100 bucks and are a sharp, contrasty lens with good color reproduction.  The focal length is pleasing for this size of sensor (effectively an 80 mm lens in 35 mm jargon) but, the real reason you want this lens for portrait, is the speed:  You can use soft natural light at F 1.8.  It also has a very shallow depth of field so it softens the subject and knocks the background out of focus to create an image that brings the attention of the viewer to the person:  Tip--always, and only, focus on the eyes!  Let the rest fall away.
