What Are The Divisions And Sub-divisions Of The Nervous System?

The nervous system is divided into two parts namely the central and peripheral nervous system.  The central nervous system is that part of the nervous system that consists of the brain and spinal cord.  That is why this part is referred to as the central nervous system, given the importance of the organs that it has.  As for the peripheral nervous system, it is the system that is made up of axons and dendrites that branch out from the brain and  spinal cord.  These axons and dendrites reach the very extremities of the body, having deep contact with every system of the human body.

The sub-divisions of the nervous system are categorized in terms of the functions that they perform.  The somatic division is that part of the nervous system that specializes in the control of the voluntary movements and the communication of information to and from the sense organs.  As for the autonomic division, it controls the involuntary movements of the body.  The last two sub-divisions are the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions where the former acts to prepare the body in emergency situations, using of the body's resources to respond to a threat whilst the latter acts to calm down the body after the emergency situation.
