The next elections in the Province of Québec will be held on March 26, 2007. Quebec residents will elect 125 Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) in ridings throughout the province. Jean Charest, Québec's current premier, made the election call on February 21st and observed that voters had a choice to make between casting their ballots for his Liberal Party, in order to maintain the current state of "responsible," cautious politics and stable economic growth, or vote for the "divisive" and separatist Parti Québécois, which would want to call another referedum on Québec independence following their election.
The three major political parties currently represented in the National Assembly are the Liberals, the Parti Québécois and the centre-right Action Démocratique (ADQ). Other parties that are expected to launch significant campaigns include the Green Party and the left-wing Québec Solidaire.
Opinion polls released during the first days of the campaign indicated that Charest's Liberals hold a slight 2% to 3% lead over André Boiclair's Parti Québécois. Most analysts believe that this will be a close election and it is possible that the ADQ will make major gains and elect more MNAs.
