Othello was written around 1604. The basic story is taken from an Italian source. The plot is :
Othello is a general in the Venetian army and a Moor (the word was used to mean both Moroccan and African.) He marries Desdemona, the daughter of a prominent Venetian who opposes the marriage on racist grounds but is overruled by the city elders.
Othello is sent to Cyprus, to repel a Turkish invasion. There, his ensign Iago plots to destroy him - Iago is furious because Othello gave the job of lieutenant to his friend Cassio, not Iago. He manages to fake evidence that Cassio and Desdemona are having an affair. Othello is gradually convinced, and finally smothers her in bed. Afterwards it is revealed that she was innocent, and he stabs himself in remorse.
The play's main theme is jealousy, and especially the effect of jealousy on a formerly rational, noble character. If you type "Othello" or "Desdemona" into the search window, you may find some other short things I've written about this play.
I'm keen on this play and literature generally, so do come back with more questions if you have any.
