Which Art Galleries Are Worth Visiting In London?

Answer Question

The first port of call for any art-loving visitor to London must surely be the Tates. Tate Britain, on the north side of the Thames, houses much of the British art collection, including hugely influential works from artists as varied as Blake, Kandinsky and Constable. Across the river you can find Tate Modern, which plays host to the post-1900 collection, including Warhol and Duchamp, amongst others. Both galleries have excellent temporary exhibitions, with the rotating pieces in Tate Modern's Turbine Hall being of particular interest.

Aside from the Tates, just off Trafalgar Square lies the National Gallery, considered by many to be one of the finest art galleries in the world. Its collection incorporates 2,300 European paintings, including Rembrandts, Van Goghs and Monets. If, however, your interests are more modern, a trip to the Serpentine in Kensington Gardens is highly recommended. This includes modern and contemporary works, with an emphasis on sculpture and photography.

There are many different galleries and museums in London, all with different themes and collections. Once you know what interests you, you can see exactly which of the major galleries and museums hold suitable collections and work to the smaller galleries from there.
