Was There Ever A Tracked Version Of The Series Land Rover?

Answer Question

Yes, a very limited number were built during the early 1960s by a company called, James Cuthbertson Ltd., of Biggar, Scotland.

The tracked conversion, which replaced all four wheels with half tracks arranged in a triangular configuration, carried full factory approval, thus ensuring the full manufacturer's warranty on the base vehicle. The tracks were run using three pressed steel wheels.

Getting in and out was a bit of a challenge when the top of the wings almost reached the roof line of a standard Land Rover.

Ultimately, only 40 Series Land Rovers were converted to tracks, and today very few of them survive. The main customer for the Cuthbertson tracked Land Rover was the RAF which used them for bomb disposal and aircraft recovery on poor ground. A few Cuthbertson tracked conversions sold to gaming estates, hill farmers and surveyors who needed access to remote moorland areas.

What killed off the tracked Land Rovers was the increased payload of helicopters which occurred at around the same time in the early 1960s.
