The name originates from the Orkneyinga Saga under the year AD1159.
Gillaodran was described as being of a very great family but being a very violent man.
He was not popular with the Scots and incurred the displeasure of the Scottish king for manslaughter and other nasty acts.
He fled to Orkney where he committed more crimes. He was driven away from Orkney and fled to the West Coast of Scotland and was killed in Myrkivifiord which it has been suggested was in fact Loch Gleann Dubh.
In Icelandic the name was originally spelt Gilliodran, which represents the modern Gaelic Gille Odhran, meaning the servant of Odran. Maelduin mac Gillaodran was a Bishop of St. Andrews who died in 1055.
