Tesco is the largest British retail company. It is known as Tesco plc and is a chain of international supermarkets. It comes in as the fourth largest retailer in the over all list of retailers. Wal-Mart of the United States, Carrefour from France and The Home Depot of United States are the top three retail companies in the world.

Tesco's market worth is estimated to be around 29.090 billion pounds as in October 2006. Initially it started specialising in food, but later broadened in the fields of clothes, electronic goods, customer related financial services and they even ventured into the field of selling and renting DVDs.

Tesco was started by Jack Cohen in London's East End. The first ever brand of Tesco was released in 1924 and first Tesco store to be started was in 1929 in Burnt Oak, Edgware, London.
