What Do You Know About HMS Beagle?

    The HMS Beagle was a Cherokee class vessel of the Royal Navy which launched from the Woolwich Dockyards on the river Thames on the 11th of May 1820. The Beagle was the first ship to sail under the new London Bridge during a celebration of King George IV's coronation.

    On the 22nd of May 1826, the HMS Beagle set out from Plymouth on her first voyage. Under the command of Captain Pringle Stokes, she was to accompany the HMS Adventure to Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. During the voyage, Captain Stokes became deeply distressed, and shot himself on the 2nd of August, 1828. Flag Lieutenant Robert FitzRoy took over. During the voyage, the Beagle channel was discovered and named after the ship.
    On the 27th of December 1831, The HMS Beagle set sail on its second voyage, once again under the command of Robert FitzRoy. Charles Darwin accompanied FitzRoy on the expedition and made some astounding discoveries that would forever change the face of science and mark Darwin as one of the most influential figures in history.

    In 1837, the Beagle set our for Australia under the command of Captain John Clements Wickham to survey the coasts. The voyage ended in 1843. This was the last great voyage of the HMS Beagle.
