The Atlas Mountains, stretching from Morocco to Algeria and Tunisia, are the only folded mountains in Africa. The reason behind the development of folded mountains is the deformation and uplift of the earth's outer layer following the deep corrosion. In the geological viewpoint, the Atlas Mountains are spreading tangentially to the European Alps, by means of separating the Strait of Gibraltar in the west side of it and the Strait of Sicily at the east side of it. The Atlas Mountains are sequenced across northwest Africa in three parallel ranges –
(A) coastal
(B) central and
(C) Saharan
