Despite its name, athlete's foot is not a condition that only athletes get. It gets its name because a lot of athletes do get it due to the conditions that they are surrounded in all the time. It can be picked up by anybody if their feet come into contact with the fungus that causes it. Once picked up, the fungus survives in hot and sweaty conditions.
It is actually fairly common and is mainly picked up at a swimming pool where there are quite a lot of people, all in bare feet, walking around. The fungus lives off dead skin cells and it can cause bumps on the feet as well as blisters, peeling and redness. It also often comes with an unpleasant smell and is extremely contagious and it can be passed on to other parts of the body if touched after you have scratched the foot.
There are many different treatments available for athlete's foot, so if you do catch it you should be able to eliminate the problem fairly quickly.
