I Would Like A Tattoo But I'm Not Sure Which Design To Go For?

Answer Question

I was the same way for a while. I had always thought wings would be nice, or an anklet of some sort, but the more I thought about it, the more I felt wings were for only a short period of life, and an anklet wouldn't be acceptable in all work places (since I hadn't decided what I wanted to do, that was important). You have to think long and hard about something that won't fade in meaning to you. Some design that will have as much importance to you at 53 as it did at 18. When I finally thought of something I didn't think I'd ever regret (a sun) that's all it was at first. A design I wouldn't regret. That's not a good enough reason to get a tat though. I felt it had to have more importance than that. I did some soul searching and found the reason I had initially felt that a sun was something that I wouldn't regret. It's a rather religious symbol to me, and better expresses my feelings than a cross would, or a crown. Obviously, not everyone thinks as I do, but I think that a tattoo requires some soul searching and maybe even coming to conclusions you don't yet want to. Be honest with yourself about why you want the tattoo in the first place. Are you in a relationship where your partner is getting one? Did your best friend get one and is pressuring you to? Did you always think you'd want one and just haven't decided what's important to you yet?

Tattoos come in all shapes and sizes, depending on how much of a statement someone wants to make. A tattoo can be applied to almost any part of the body, from a common area such as the arm to a more unusual place such as the back of the neck (such as David Beckham).

The design that you choose is entirely your choice but should be something you can bear to look at for pretty much the rest of your life. Lots of people go for something that reflects their beliefs or values ~such as a symbol or image. Fashionable tattoos at the moment include snakes, Chinese symbols and dragons. You should research designs extensively, or visit a tattoo studio and ask for their design catalogue.

It is often recommended that if you want your tattoo to last, you should avoid too many colours within the design ~ these will need retouching several times over the years which can be expensive.

If you really can't face the prospect of having a permanent tattoo, there are some equally good temporary tattoos around which last for around three to five years on average.

Where you put it, is as important as what you get.

First of all, the location you choose defines the canvase that the artist has to work with.  Larger canvase gives more options.  What looks good on your upper back might look bad on your shoulder, and vis versa.

When you choose the location, please remember that even though tattoos are now somewhat mainstream, they are still only so on the fringe.  As you move up in the workforce, some skin art locations may find themselves to be inappropriate, so keep in mind what you plan on doing over the next 10 or 20 years, because this decision may affect it.

Next, what to get!  One of the most important things to remember is your first should be something that defines you!  My first was a scorpion, next, a trinity knot, and then a flesh ripping tiger.  Each of them have a specific meaning to me and will always have that meaning.

If you are in your teens, try this...  Think about the music you like now, and compare it to what you listened to just 2 or 3 years back.  I would expect that your tastes have probably changed somewhat.  So too will how much meaning symbols you like today have a few years from now.  Remember that music and fashion are "TRENDS"  Boyfriends and girlfriends may leave, and cartoons grow old fast.  Pick something that is meaningful to you, whether it be an image or symbol.  My son, who is Canadian living in the US decided on a Canadian flag with Born Canadian written below it in grafitti style, reflecting his herritage, and his love of street art.  Neither of these will likely change, and thus his choices will endure the test of time.  His location, lower neck.  Hidden by any shirt, but visible if he chooses to show it.

So take your time, and make your choices for the long term.  Remember, you MAY be able to remove the ink via laser, but the skin scars will stay.  Most who have a tattoo removed, eventually get one put back over the scar.

Lastly, remember that no one ever gets ONE tattoo... Once you get the bug, you have it forever...  A good idea is to pick a design, and / or location that gives you options for expansion.  By adding color next year, or extending the image a little, you may be able to reduce your costs, as well as expand on a single canvas rather than having 4 or 5 or more unassociated designes over various parts of your body.  My tiger will soon be accompanied by a snake and dragon also ripping out of the flesh, each reflecting the beast inside, and the fight between my different beasts...  It may take 10 years, but the plan is there.

I think if you want to get a tattoo but are not sure what to get then maybe you don't really want one. You should take time to think about it i mean you are going to have to live with it for the rest of your life. I personally think a tattoo should be of significant meaning to a person for instants it should symbolize the coming into an important part of life, or portray loved ones like your children, or it should symbolize other significant things like passed loved ones, or the coming out of an abusive relationship etc.
