I think because they would be stuck with that child body forever and would miss out on a lot of things that being an adult has to offer. But I only watched the movie; someone who read the book might be able to give more insight. :)

It's because they can't control themselves. They are stuck at the mindset of their young age and are unable to control their blood lust or not expose themselves.
