MIMD is mainly used for entirely parallel tasks that don't really have to communicate with each other.
SIMD is probably the most common form of scientific computing as it utilizes several computers to work on the same task. Example: SETI@home: they used thousands of computers around the globe to find aliens. Each computer did the exact same thing (SI) but worked on different chunks of data (MD).
