ACDC have sold well over 150 million albums worldwide, and in the United States alone, they have sold 68 million albums. They are one of the most commercially successful hard rock acts ever. Their 1980 album, Back in Black, on which vocalist Brian Johson made his debut following the tragic death of Bon Scott, has alone sold 42 million units worldwide and remains the second highest selling album of all time and is the largest selling album by any band.

ACDC's distinctive power chord roar was one of the most influential hard rock sounds of the 1970s. Their brand of rock was very minimalist, with a clear sense of restraint and space.

They are widely accpeted as being the pioneers of hard rock and Heavy metal, along with Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, but they prefer to describe their music as "rock 'n' roll" and also accept the description "hard rock".
