What Do You Know About NETWORK DATA MODEL?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The original network model and language were presented in the CODASYL through its Data Base Task Group (DBTG). It is sometimes called the DBTG model. The initial report describing a network database implementation was issued in 1971. Revised reports were issued in 1978 and 1981.

The network data model was the basis of one of the oldest database management system IDS (Integrated Data System) developed by Charles Bachman at General Electric during the 1960s. In 1963, the Electric Company began to market the IDS. The "Bachman Diagram" was also named in the honor of Charles Bachman to represent network databases.
Many network DBMSs exist today. The most widely used of these systems is IDMS (Integrated Database Management System) from Computer Associates. Others include Prime DBMS from Prime Computers, DBMS-11 from DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation).
The network model uses a network structure, which is a data structure consisting of nodes and branches. The records are organized as graph structures with records appearing as nodes and relationship as edges in the graph.

In network data model there is no distinction between parent and child record types as in the hierarchical model. Any record type can be associated with an arbitrary number of different record types.
