Babies are born with 300 bones in their body and yet by the time they reach adulthood, they have only 206 bones. This is because some of the bones fuse together. If we didn't have bones you couldn't stand up, walk, bend, or do any of the things we take for granted. Without bones we would just be a puddle of skin on the floor.
Bones have two purposes: some provide structure, such as the backbone and the rib-cage, others provide protection for the important parts of our body such as the brain which the skull protects and the bone of your vertebrae, which protect your spinal column.
Bones are able to move with the help of the muscles that surround them. This means that you are able to move your head, shoulders, knees, ankles etc. Bones are a mixture of a hard substance which gives them the structure and living cells, which help them repair when broken. If bones were not living, when you broke your arm or leg, it simply wouldn't repair itself and you would be permanently broken.
The human hand has a staggering 27 bones in it and your face has14. The longest bone in your body is the thigh bone (or femur as it is also known) and did you know that human and giraffes have the same amount of bones in their neck?
