The Normans had signed on the treaty of Melfi. The treaty of Melfi was a treaty that was signed some time during the August of 1059; this treaty was signed between the Pope Nicholas II and by the Normans. By signing this treaty Pope Nicholas II made sure that he recognized the influence of the Normans over the southern Italy. This treaty also made the pope realize that Robert Guiscard was the duke of Apulia, the Count of Sicily and the Duke of Calabria.
