I have type two diabetes since last year. If you are over weight that can cause it. But loosing the weight can get rid of it. I started with a real thirst and needing to drink a lot. Then running to the toilet a lot more than usual. As my doctor described, Drink like a fish and pee like a race horse. I think before this I used to get shakey with hunger and needed a drink of milk and a biscuit to calm it down. Hope this helps.

Someone with diabetes has a lot of glucose in their blood. They cannot produce the insulin needed to get the glucose into cells for respiration and the glucose levels just build up to very high levels. This has several effects.
The kidney does its best to get rid of the sugar by forcing it out in the urine. The concentration of sugar is so high as the urine is produced through the kidney that it takes loads of water with it. The diabetic therefore produces lots of dilute urine and is forever tripping to the toilet.
The water that is lost has to be replenished ~ the diabetic has no problem with water balance and the loss of water triggers the thirst response. Diabetics are always thirsty and drink loads and loads of water.
Because the body is generally out of balance, someone developing diabetes feels very tired and generally unwell, as well as fed up with the excessive thirst, drinking and trips to the loo.
If diabetes goes untreated, the affected person cannot gain any energy from their food and they lose weight. Eventually, the diabetic can actually starve to death but, thankfully, with insulin treatment, most can manage their condition and lead a normal life.

- What the person described above is Type I diabetes mellitus. Type II diabetes is when the pancreas produces enough insulin, but for some reason, the kidneys are insensitive to it, and thus, cannot effectively control blood sugar levels. As for the symptoms, here are some from the ADA's (American Diabetes Association) website:
- *Frequent urination
- *Excessive thirst
- *Extreme hunger
- *Unusual weight loss
- *Increased fatigue
- *Irritability
- *Blurry vision
