What Are Holbein's Most Notable Pieces Of Art?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The most famous of Holbein's pieces is certainly The Ambassadors, a portrait of Jean de Dintville, the French ambassador to England, and a companion. Behind the subjects can be seen a table on which are placed numerous accurately-rendered objects, the meaning of which has been debated for some time. There is certainly reference to the careers of the two men, with globes and a sextant visible. However, the most notable characteristic of the painting is the strange skull placed near the bottom of the composition. This is painted using a technique known as anamorphic perspective, in which the viewer must stand almost directly to the side of the painting in order to see the object correctly. When looking face-on it is difficult to see what the object is. It is thought that the combination of objects and the painting's composition, along three horizontal planes, is a reference to the three levels of heaven, earth and hell.
