The short answer to your question is that it it English. Lucas isn't Italian, it is actually of Greek origin. The Anglican spelling, "Lucas" is derived from "Loukas" which is the Greek spelling of St Luke the Evangelist, author of the Gospel of Luke, but is also means "one from Lucania" which is a region in southern Italy. It was common practice in England during the Middle Ages to adopt surnames with religious references and it was for this reason that "Lucas" or "Lukas" became a surname in England with their ancestral home in Hertfordshire. People with this surname immigrated to both Ireland and America, the first Lucas in America is believed to be Clothyer Lucas who settled Virginia in 1652 but others with this surname also settled in New England.
