The son of Charles Albert, king of Sardinia, became famous in the history of mankind in the name of Victor Emmanuel. To identify him apart from Victor Emmanuel I, he was named Victor Emmanuel II. He was born on 14th of March in the year of 1820 at Turin in Piedmont which was a part of Sardinia. Victor Emmanuel II would ever be remembered in the history as the first king of United Italy from the year of 1861.
Victor Emmanuel II did a good job in the war of 1848 against Austria. After the war his father handed over the responsibility of the kingdom to him. In the year of 1849, Victor Emmanuel became the king of Sardinia. He made the kingdom strong with the help of his minister Camillo Cavour. Victor Emmanuel also supported the Risorgimento movement for unity. He commanded the troops to win in the battles of Magenta and Solferino in the war against Austria from the year of 1859 to 1861.
Giuseppe De Garibaldi was very much encouraged in the conquest of Sicily and Naples by Victor Emmanuel II and led the incursion of the Papal States. He took the title of king of Italy in the year of 1861. Later he obtained the Venetia in the year of 1866 and Rome in the year of 1870. Victor Emmanuel II was died on 9th of January in the year of 1878 in Rome.
