Answer Question

As many other symbols the prefix 'femto' is also used in the SI or metric system and the term is used to denote the factor of 10‾15 or in zero based system it denotes 0.000000000000001. The examples that can be a help to illustrate the term further is given below: 10‾15 s is equal to one femtosecond and 10‾15 J can be considered as equivalent to one femtojoule.

The symbol was adopted to be used as an international system for measuring things in the year 1964 and it can trace its origin either in Danish or Norwegian word femten. The meaning it conveys is that of fifteen and the meaning is also very obvious with what the word signifies.

One of the things that should always be kept into mind is that when you are using it as a prefix of metre and writing it with the symbol 'fm' it may convey some other things also as 'fm' is a term that is used in the nuclear physics to denote something else.
