When Was The Bayeux Tapestry Completed?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Bayeux Tapestry was possibly completed in 1077, when the Cathedral's construction was completed. However, its origins have been the subject matter to assumptions and controversies.

The Bayeux Tapestry in French is also known as Tapisserie de Bayeux. It is as a 50 cm by 70 m (20 in by 230 ft) long embroidered fabric. It depicts the scenes of Battle of Hastings which took place on October 14, 1066, with explanation in Latin. It tells the tale of the Norman invasion of England. The hero of the tapestry is William the Conqueror, who captured the crown at the age of 38.

The tapestry contains numerous mysteries. In one sheet there is a clergyman striking a lady.  However, historians feel that this could be a small incident that took place on that particular day, which required no clarification. There are 2 other panels missing which historians speculate would be the scene of Williams's coronation.
