    A director's cut is a version of a film released to the edit specified by the director rather than by anyone else. Film making is a costly business and success at the box office is all that enables investors to make money. Few directors have the final say in the edit of a film. For example, pre-release screenings might suggest alterations to the ending which are them made against the director's wishes. It is not only commerce that can get in the ay of a director having total control. depending on how the team is et up film editors are highly skilled, may have sufficent artistic control to choose an edit which might not be the director's choice. The availabilty of director;s cut versions has rsien alongside the video and DVD markets. Started in the 1980s as a means of satisfying hardened film fans the increase in availabilty of director's cut versions of films already released has grown alongside the digital technologies that have made the production and distribution of films easier and cheaper.
