I would ask once more and then request he send it certified mail, return receipt requested. That way, either of you can track it while it is in the mail, and he'll know when you got it (since he's probably had someone else lie about receiving a check in the past).

Generally thirty to sixty days is plenty of time for a landlord to return your deposit.
