Is It Okay To Put Roof Shingles Over Existing Roof Shingles?

Answer Question

I have known of a couple people who have done this, my husband and I included, but I do not recommend it.
A tear off is a lot of work, but suggest you do it because if the old shingles are in bad shape and start popping up you are most likely going to have a problem.
Also, you will want to check the sub-roof for any deterioration and replace any plywood that is in rough shape. Your new roof will last a lot longer if you go ahead and do the extra work.
Wish we had done that in the beginning. It would have saved us a lot of aggravation and money. Shingles are not cheap.

That is a very good question, Nomad. I have never seen a guest come back and mark a question as answered. Maybe it sits there for a month and then is moved?

Most codes will allow you to put upto three layers of shingles before you have to do a take-off of all the layers
