What Is The Difference Between A Thong And A Dip-thong?

Answer Question

10 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

A diphthong a vowel sound that changes noticeably in quality during the pronunciation of a syllable, as in the English words wide, late, beer, or round. Diphthongs are thus distinguished from simple vowels (cat, feed etc.), which are referred to by phoneticians as monophthongs.

There seems to be a bunch of diphthongs running around out there!  LOL

There is more than one definition for a thong.

    1. A narrow strip, as of leather, used for binding or lashing.
    2. A whip of plaited leather or cord.
    3. A sandal held on the foot by a strip that fits between the first and second toes and is connected to a strap usually passing over the top or around the sides of the foot.
    4. A garment for the lower body that exposes the buttocks, consisting of a narrow strip of fabric that passes between the thighs supported by a waistband.

So in short you mean: A diphthong puts two vowels together and a thong separates two buttocks...lol...♥Nassy

A dip-thong is a skimpy garment you wear when swimming. A thong is similar but worn later in the day, usually at dusk - hence the ditty " Just a thong at twilight" (!)

I thought a thong was an item that women wear (well I guess men can wear them too) under their clothing in place of their panties and a dip thong was something a woman wore when she takes a dip in the pool!  Lol ☺☺

A thong is something you wear ( albeit uncomfy) and a dipthong is something you put potato chips in.

A thong is an article of underwear and a dipthong is an elongated vowel sound made by combining two vowels.

Dipthongs are often derived from Latin and Greek words and when that is the case they are usually printed so close together they are practically intersecting each other.  This is nigh impossible with word processors, so has probably largely fallen into disuse.

An example would be amoebae (plural of amoeba).  Because most of them derive from Greek or Latin, they are very common in medical terminology.  In the US they have largely been dropped for the vowel sound they make eg. Paediatrician (Classical/English) or pediatrician (USA), which means a specialist in children's medicine.

In Hebrew dipthong sounds are quite interesting.  Because it is traditionally written only with consonants, the vowels are separated by the first letter of the alphabet, Aleph, which indicates an infinitesimal pause between the two.

A diphthong is A complex speech sound or glide that begins with one vowel and gradually changes to another vowel within the same syllable, as (oi) in boil or (ī) in fine.

A thong is a brief garment for the lower body that exposes the buttocks, consisting of a strip of fabric passing between the thighs and attached to a band around the waist.
