There is some important work being done by women scientists in the field of robotics, notably by Cynthia Brazeal whilst she was at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. Her work has led the way in sociable robotics has - particularly the Kismet robot which was a robotic head able to display a variety of different emotions, such as anger, surprise and disgust. Kismet had 'drives' for human companionship and for play, so that it would call visitors to it and derive pleasure if it's favourite toys were brought to its attention. Another leading female roboticist is Lijin Aryananda, also formerly of MIT, who developed another robot head project called Mertz. Her work built on that done by Brazeal and both rook important steps towards understanding human emotions and replicating them in robotic artefacts.
