Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The USS Jimmy Carter identified as the SSN-23 is a submarine that is named after the Former President. The reason perhaps is that the President served on a submarine when he was in the Navy. The naming of the submarine was unique as most US Navy vessels named after individuals have been so named after the person's death. He was the only President of the United States to have done so.

The boat which measures 138 meters in length was ordered by the Navy in the year 1996. It however was christened on the 5th of June in the year 2004 and was commissioned on the 19th of February the next year. The armament of the submarine includes eight torpedo tubes of 762 mm, Harpoon missiles, Tomahawk missiles and the ability to lay mines and it also possesses additional manoeuvring devices.
