Farewell to Arms is a book which was published by Ernest Hemingway in 1927. He was a American authour born 1899 and died in 1961.
Farewell to Arms is an account of how he went to war in 1918 (the year the first World War ended). The book graphically describes the uncertainty, fear and courage he found whilst based in North Italy. The book is not a glory to arms, but a stark picture of just how horrific war is. He was injured whilst in Italy, but was twice decorated for his service there.
Hemingway later went to Spain during the Spanish Civil War and documented his experiences there in For Whom the Bell Tolls.
He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1954. His personal life was also colourful, he had a passionate love of women and reputedly, alcohol. His reputation as both a womaniser and hellraiser lives on but he is also revered for his writing.
