The ability to identify by ear or to sing a musical note with absolute perfection without any aegis from a musical instrument is termed as Perfect Pitch. It is quite a rare flair in actuality, the few ones possessing this talent being of enormous help to them in composing music. In the ancient times of Greece, there was not any particular fixed pitch benchmark for instruments. The case was the same even in the Renaissance times. When the string orchestras were created, however, the need for a fixed pitch benchmark became necessary. Finally the organ was chosen as the benchmark as the standard note that it gave was was less variable than that of other instruments. As for unaccompanied singing, the fixed pitch benchmark was a pitch pipe or tuning fork. Nevertheless if the composer has the talent of a perfect pitch, he / she can give the gamut of notes by himself / herself without the aegis of any aid.
