To increase the speed of your computer you will need to upgrade you're the ram as well as the processor of your computer. If you're currently using a 256 MB Ram chip and your computer still functions slowly it would be better if you upgraded it to 512 MB Ram.

Same goes with the processor if you're currently using a 1.6 ghz processor it would be better if you used the latest 2.6 ghz one to enhance the speed of your computer. Generally higher the Ram the faster your computer will function.

Random access memory RAM basically is a sort of data store applied in computers. It takes the shape of integrated circuits which permit the stored data to be accessed in any sequence, which is at random and devoid of any material movement of the storage medium or a physical reading head.

Some obvious steps are to remove any programmes or documents that you don't need, the more your machine is filled up, the slower it will go.  Get rid of anything you haven't used in the last six months.  Look out for large picture, movie or audio files that you don't need, they take up loads and loads of space

Run adware and spyware removal - there are free programmes on internet, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard, Spybot Search and Destroy.  Spy and Ad ware seriously monkey with your machine.  Make sure you do a virus scan too.

You could back up all your data to an external drive (they're really cheap these days) and then reinstall using your recovery disk that came with your computer.

Defrag your hard drive during safe mode (that's F8 during Windows start up BIOS)

Failing that, sell your old machine and a body organ and buy a Mac.
