Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh and the country's largest city. It is a major commercial, cultural, and manufacturing centre producing jute, silk, and cotton textiles; carpets; processed food; chemicals; jewellery; and rubber goods.
The city's old section, an amalgam of crowded bazaars and labyrinthine streets, is altogether different from Ramna Maidan, a modern well-planned area to the north, where government buildings and educational institutions are located.
The city is the site for more than 700 mosques. Other features include Lal Bagh Fort and the tomb of Pari Bibi, both built in the late 17th century, and the large Parliament building designed by Louis I. Kahn, The University of Dhaka , Jahangirnagar University and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.
Dhaka rose to importance in the 17th century when it became the capital of Bengal during Mughal rule. During that period it gained fame for production of fine muslins. However, the capital was moved to Murshidabad in 1704. The city fell to the British in 1765. After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, it became the capital of East Pakistan in 1956. The city became the capital of Bangladesh on its independence from Pakistan in 1971. The city's population according to the 1991 estimates was 3,368,940
