How Do You Do This? Combining Like Terms 7-4y+x+9y

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Consider all the x's and y's as like terms.

    7 - 4y + x + 9y   only has two like terms, the two expressed as multiples of y

we'll combine -4y with 9y to make it simpler

    x + 5y +7

Think of x's and y's as something more physical. When you see x, think 'apples' and when you see y, think 'peaches.' then the next time you see another x, you'll know it's just a place holder for apples and you have more apples. That's all algebra is, a shorthand to make mathematical relationships in the world easier.

7-4y+x+9y add the (-4y) and the (+9y) together and your answer will be:
7+x+5y when you add two numbers together that have different signs like -4 and +9, you subtract and then keep the sign from the larger number. So nine minus four gives us 5 and the absolute value of positive nine is greater than the absolute value of negative four so you'll have a positive five y
