You need to get English language, mathematics at GCSE - those 2 are absolutely essential for any UK university course. As well as those you need to do 'A' levels - and yes they are compulsory, unless you are in your 20's and have been supporting yourself financially for a couple of years - then you are a mature student and different criteria apply.

I'm going to university this year. It's not really the GCSEs that matter, its the A levels. As long as you get at least Cs in English, Maths and Science and decent marks across the board for your GCSE subjects they don't matter too much. If you want to go to one of the best unis then yea you probably would need to do A-levels, although some courses would probably accept other qualifications like a national diploma or whatever other computing qualifications you can get. Really you need to check the individual courses and their entry requirements, but most require a certain amount of points from your A-levels.
