Many tourist sites have interpretative facilities at tourist sites, to make the tourist feel more involved and even wanted. People prefer to see something after they have driven hundreds of miles, or walked for days across a trail to reach a look out point. They want information, random though it may seem.
The tourist board also has to justify it's presence and it's park entry fees, and this is a good way to do this and be seen to be giving the tourist something back for their entry fee.
Sometimes the information can be essential to the visitors, who have come to expect it, and would complain if it was't there.

Most tourist sites these days have information kiosks that are electronic and provide details of the site in several languages. The advantages are obvious, electronic facilities can provide the relevant information in a wide range of languages that would be difficult to provide in print or on sign boards. Not all the tourist visiting England speaks English. It is a similar scenario for say a person from the UK travelling to China and not knowing a word of Chinese. An interpretation facility allows tourist to better understand the cultural significance of the site in their own language. They may feel more comfortable with this arrangement as they may comprehend facts better in their own language. The facilities are also an advantage for tourist not visiting as part of a tour that supports a guide or prefer looking around on their own. It enhances the overall experience of travel.
