Avonlea is a historical tourist village in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island (PEI), which recreates the beloved characters and atmosphere in author L.M. Montgomery's classic novel "Anne of Green Gables," and the "Chronicles of Avonlea." Montgomery's published her first book on Green Gables in 1908. People in Avonlea are dressed in period costumes from the first years of the twentieth century when they welcome visitors and act out famous scenes from Montgomery's books.
Avonlea and Anne of Green Gables are key components of PEI's tourism industry. Thanks to a number of movies and a television series based on the book, audiences around the world have been given a glimpse of life in rural PEI at the turn of the twentieth century. The CBC's "Road to Avonlea," a television series, which ran from 1989 to 1996, was perhaps the most popular of these and was geared towards children, young adults and family audiences.
Avonlea Village is open from June to September and is located on Route 6, near the town of Cavendish. Full day passes cost $22 for adults, $18 for students and is free for all children under six years of age.
