What Is The History Of Newcastle United Football Club?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Newcastle United were formed in 1892 and are based in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.

They are nicknamed the 'Magpies' due to the black and white stripy kit that the team plays in.

As was popular with many cricket teams towards the end of the 19th century, the Stanley Cricket Club of South Byker decided in 1881 to play football during the winter months to keep up their physical fitness levels so that they would be ready to return to cricket the following year.

The team changed it's name to Newcastle East End FC.
Across the city, another cricket team had also formed a football team that were called Newcastle West End FC and played at St James Park.
The East End FC were far more successful than the West End, who were encountering sporting and financial difficulties.

The East End FC took over the West End FC club and became Newcastle United. The club still play on the original ground of West End FC which is St James Park.
