The word Dundee is of Gaelic origin and the meaning it conveys is that of a 'fort on the Tay'.
Dundee is one of largest cities in the country of Scotland and is located on the bank of the river Tay. This phenomenon itself says everything about the reason behind the name.
The city is known to the world as the city of discovery also and this name can be attributed because the city has the history of scientific discoveries. The exploration vessel 'Antarctic' built by Robert Falcon Scott was built here itself and the current home of the vessel is also this very city.
The city got the great expansion in size because of the industrial revolution and the most important industry was jute as Dundee was quite close to the sea and jute from India could be easily imported. The majority of the workforce was involve in this industry but later when industrialists realised that it is far cheaper to process the jute in India itself the city's industrial glory started fading.
