When Was Swindon Town Football Club Founded?

    Swindon Town Football Club was founded in 1881by Reverend William Pitt of Littington. The club turned professional in 1894 and initially joined the Southern League which they became champions of in 1910/11. They played against Manchester United in the Charity Shield in the same year and lost by 8 goals to 4. This is still the highest scoring Charity Shield match of all time.

    The club was eventually accepted into the Football League as a founder member of the Third Division in 1920.

    Swindon Town won the League Cup in 1969. The final was played against Arsenal at Wembley and Swindon won by 3 goals to 1.
    They also reached the FA cup semi-finals in 1910 and 1912.

    Swindon Town have played their home games at the County Ground since 1896. It has a capacity for approximately 15,700 spectators.

    The club currently plays in the League Two division of the Football League and finished in 23rd place at the end of the 2005/06 season.
