How Are Sweeteners Produced?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Sugar is manufactured from either the sugar cane crop or from the beet crop. Artificial sugar on the other hand can be manufactured from Saccharin, Aspartame, Acesulfame, Sucralose or Tagatose.

Saccharin was the first of a series of sweeteners and was discovered in 1879. The chemical is three hundred times sweeter than sugar yet it does not contain any calories whatsoever as it is not metabolized by the human body. Aspartame is a sweetener that is obtained from combining the amino acids phenylalanine and aspartic acid. Acesulfame is formed by combining acetoacetic acid with potassium. Sucralose is formed by replacing an oxygen group and three hydrogen ones in a sugar molecule with three atoms of chlorine. Then there is Tagatose which is derived from lactulose or what is known as milk sugar.
