The books always say to give your dog other things that are acceptable to chew.  redirect the dog when you see it chewing bad things, and give it good things to chew, and heap on the verbal praise when you do so.  one thing my dogs liked when they were teething was an old (but clean) sock- wet it and then freeze it.  the frozen sock helps to numb their sore gums.
