Where Does The Lute Derive Its Name?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The lute refers to a string instrument which has a fretted neck and it has a  deep round back. The name Lute has been derived from the Arabic language. It means "The Wood". The musician that plays the lute is known as a lutenist, lutist or lutanist.  The person who makes the lute is known as the Luthier.

The entire body of the lutes is mainly made of wood. The soundboard of the lute is tear drop in shape, with a thin flat plate composed of resonant wood.

The origin of the lute is very obscure; the lute developed its common form in Persia, Byzantium, Armenia and Arab somewhere around the early 7th century. However lutes were also used in the Roman, Egyptian and Chinese cultures.
