    The founder of the Bruce dynasty in Scotland was Robert de Brus, a Norman Knight who came over with William the Conqueror. He was granted lands in Yorkshire
    His son was granted lands in  Annandale in Scotland. Robert was Lord of Annandale and paid hommage to David I of Scotland.

    Robert advised the Scottish king not to fight the English at the Battle of Northallerton in Northumbris, was branded a traitor and told to withdraw from the Scottish 'camp'.

    The man we know as Robert the Bruce or the Earl of Carrick  was his direct descendant. This latter Robert , born in 1274 went on to free Scotland from English rule and crave himself a place in Scottish history and legend. He died in 1329 at Cardross. his body was buried in Dunfermline Abbey and his heart in Melrose.
